From 20 KB to 5 MB, or your own size

Compress an image to the size you need

Set a maximum file size and get images within it, in the same format. Allow proportional resizing when a small limit needs fewer pixels; Bitinz shows the new dimensions with each result.

Balanced size and speed — recommended

Compress to a size in three steps

  1. Choose the maximum size

Pick a preset or enter your own size in KB or MB. Bitinz counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes; if a form counts 1,024 bytes, leave a little room.

  2. Allow resizing for small limits

Turn on resizing for limits such as 20 KB or 50 KB. Add a minimum width and height if a form requires them; the image is never enlarged or cropped.

  3. Upload and download

Upload JPG, PNG or WebP images. Each file is checked against the limit on its own; download the results within the limit or read why one could not fit.

What a limit like 2 MB means

A limit such as 2 MB refers to the file's size in bytes, not its width or height in pixels. Bitinz counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and 1 KB as 1,000 bytes. Some systems count 1,024 bytes per KB, so choose a slightly smaller target when unsure.

Why small limits need fewer pixels

Compression can remove only so much before quality suffers. For small targets, Bitinz can reduce width and height proportionally instead, keeping its balanced quality floor. It never crops, stretches or enlarges, and shows the new dimensions with the result. See image size requirements for how pixels and file size differ.

A file within the limit, or a clear reason

An upload that already fits is kept as it is. Otherwise Bitinz tries its normal compression, then smaller dimensions. If nothing fits in the time available, you see the reason and the smallest size found, never a file over the limit. For a worked example, read how to compress an image to 100 KB.

Which images can be reduced

JPG, lossy WebP and PNG can be compressed and resized to a size. AVIF, lossless or animated WebP and animated PNG are only checked, and kept if they already fit. The format stays the same; if a form accepts JPG, WebP to JPG is a separate step.

  • Turn on Target size, choose 100 KB and upload the image. If the result says it can't reach 100 KB at its current size, allow resizing and try again.
