A lighter format for PNG photos
Photos saved as PNG can be large. Converting them to WebP often saves plenty of space, helping pages open faster and images travel more easily.
Compare the detail before you publish
This is a lossy conversion, designed to keep the visible difference small. Look at edges, colours and fine detail in the comparison before choosing the result.
Your transparent background stays
Successful PNG to WebP conversions keep transparency, including partially transparent edges. If a 16-bit PNG’s transparency cannot be preserved exactly, conversion is rejected. The visible image can still change slightly, so check the result against the background where you plan to use it.
Sometimes PNG is the better choice
Logos, flat-colour illustrations and graphics may be smaller as compressed PNG than as WebP. We show a notice when that happens. Choose “Keep format” to get an optimized PNG instead.
